Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong has stood on Connaught Road in Central since 1963, the first hotel of the group and still its flagship, with harbour-view rooms, Man Wah's Michelin-starred Cantonese dining and the Captain's Bar where the city's deals are closed. The hotel is in the heart of Central, a short walk from the Star Ferry pier and the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre across in Wan Chai. Rooms were rebuilt in the mid-2000s and again more recently, keeping the Asian detailing while bringing the harbour views up to date; the Mandarin Spa spreads across three floors with a pool and Chinese medicine clinic.
Man Wah on the top floor has held its Michelin star for years and remains the Cantonese room the city's own families book; The Chinnery is the clubbable British bar; Captain's Bar pours silver tankards of beer to the same crowd that filled it in the seventies. The Mandarin Cake Shop's rose-petal jam is the thing to take home.
