The Connaught sits on Carlos Place, a few streets from Claridge's but with a quieter, more residential character: a mahogany staircase, Hélène Darroze's three-Michelin-star restaurant, the Connaught Bar and an Aman Spa. The hotel dates from 1815 and was rebuilt in 1897; the staircase, the panelling and the sense of a private club remain. Rooms by Guy Oliver and later hands are classical rather than fashionable, and the suites at the front look onto the Tadao Ando fountain on Carlos Place. The hotel is small enough that the concierge knows a returning guest's car before it stops.
Hélène Darroze at The Connaught holds three Michelin stars and is one of the few London tables that justifies planning a trip around it; Jean-Georges at The Connaught is the all-day room on the corner. The Connaught Bar has been named the best in the world more than once, and its martini trolley is the correct way to begin a Mayfair evening. The Aman Spa is the group's only London address.
